The Ordinary – Oyster Hall

Ambiance

The Ordinary – Oyster Hall is set within a beautifully restored historic Charleston building, which, I believe, was once a bank. This unique space seamlessly blends the old with the new, creating an atmosphere that is both charming and sophisticated. The décor features antique elements that pay homage to the building’s rich history, while modern touches like tall ceilings with exposed piping add a contemporary flair. The result is a one-of-a-kind dining experience that perfectly marries the building’s storied past with its present-day purpose.

Service

The staff at The Ordinary is exceptional, offering attentive and knowledgeable service throughout the meal. They truly shine when guiding you through the extensive oyster selections, ensuring you find the perfect match for your taste. Their expertise and friendly demeanor make the dining experience all the more enjoyable.

Food Selection

The Ordinary is a haven for seafood and fish lovers! While the menu does include a steak tartare appetizer, a steak entrée, and some vegetable sides, the majority of the dishes incorporate seafood in some way. The restaurant also offers a separate drink menu with an impressive variety of wines, which seems to be a particular point of pride. Additionally, there’s a great selection of spirits, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options to complement your meal.

Appetizers

The appetizer menu at The Ordinary is a seafood lover’s dream, featuring a wide variety of oysters, clams, tartares, and impressive seafood towers. My husband, John, and I opted for the smaller seafood tower, and it was so delightful that we ordered more of our favorite oysters. Each oyster comes with a choice of tangy and hot sauces, adding just the right amount of kick. We also shared the Bradford Okra & Tomato Gumbo, which was deliciously spiced without being overpowering—a perfect complement to our seafood feast.

Main Courses

The main course menu at The Ordinary offers a selection of shrimp, grouper, pompano, snapper, and steaks, alongside special selections based on the freshest catches of the day. John and I decided to try the grouper, a fish neither of us had tasted before, and it was absolutely delicious. Grouper is known for its ‘meatier’ texture, but The Ordinary slow cooks it to perfection, resulting in a tender and juicy dish. It was beautifully complemented by tomatoes, peas, and a soft, flavorful mashed potato that tied everything together.

Desserts

Unfortunately, we didn’t have room for dessert, but I did notice that their selection is offered on a separate menu, which rotates regularly. The options looked enticing, and we’ll definitely save room next time to try one of their tempting creations.

Final Thoughts

The Ordinary – Oyster Hall is a must-visit for seafood enthusiasts. The combination of historic charm, attentive service, and expertly prepared dishes makes for an unforgettable dining experience. Whether you’re a Charleston local or just visiting, be sure to make a reservation—you won’t be disappointed!
