SNOB- Slightly North Of Broad

Ambiance

A Warm Welcome to Old-World Elegance

Despite what the name Slightly North of Broad might suggest, SNOB offers a homey yet sophisticated atmosphere that perfectly balances casual comfort and timeless elegance. The interior design captivates with thick, elegant wood moldings and walls of exposed brick, creating a space that feels both warm and expensive. The seating is thoughtfully designed—comfortable chairs upholstered in rich red on one side and a charming red plaid on the other, evoking a sense of old-world charm.

A standout feature of the ambiance is the open kitchen, framed by a massive brick archway. This architectural detail not only enhances the room’s aesthetic but also provides diners with an unobstructed view of the kitchen in action. Guests can watch as dishes are carefully prepared, gaining an appreciation for the culinary craftsmanship and the spotless cleanliness of the space.

Adding to the inviting atmosphere, a live band played soft, unobtrusive music during the evening. The melodies were easy to appreciate without overshadowing conversation, making it an ideal setting for a relaxed and intimate meal. Even the plating felt personal and unpretentious, akin to dining in the home of a gracious and affluent friend.

Overall, SNOB’s ambiance exudes understated luxury with a touch of casual grace, offering an experience that is both welcoming and memorable.

Service

Warm, Friendly, and Attentive

The service at SNOB complements its inviting ambiance, standing out as one of the highlights of the dining experience. From the moment you’re seated, the staff exudes warmth and friendliness, creating a comfortable and welcoming environment. They are attentive without ever crossing into being intrusive, striking the perfect balance for an enjoyable meal.

The servers are exceptionally knowledgeable and eager to help, offering thoughtful recommendations and insights into the dishes. For instance, when I was torn between the duck and the lamb, our waitress gave an honest and personal opinion, sharing that she considered the lamb the best dish on the menu. She even acknowledged her general dislike of duck but noted that others who enjoy it rave about the preparation here. It was refreshing to receive such candid advice, which felt more like guidance from a friend than a sales pitch.

Additionally, the staff went out of their way to ensure our needs were met, inquiring about food allergies or dietary restrictions—a thoughtful touch that added to the overall sense of care and professionalism.

SNOB’s service is a masterclass in hospitality: warm, helpful, and entirely focused on enhancing the guest experience.

A Range of Southern-Inspired Delights

SNOB’s menu is thoughtfully crafted to showcase both Lowcountry classics and more elevated dishes, making it a true culinary destination.

For appetizers, you’ll find a delightful array of options, including hearty soups, fresh salads, seafood small plates, and a charcuterie board featuring premium meats and accompaniments. These starters set the stage for a memorable meal.

The mains offer something for everyone, with a particular focus on seafood. Highlights include the Charleston classic shrimp and grits, alongside options like a perfectly cooked pork chop, tender duck, succulent lamb, and a flavorful steak. Each dish can be paired with a variety of sides, from creamy grits and rich potatoes to fresh seasonal vegetables.

Desserts are equally enticing, with staples like apple pie and banana bread pudding alongside rotating seasonal offerings. Each sweet treat is crafted with care, providing the perfect finish to your meal.

Appetizers

A Flavorful Start

We began our meal at SNOB with three appetizers, each offering a unique and memorable experience.

First, the Butternut Squash Bisque set the bar high. Unlike many bisques that rely on cream for thickness, this soup achieved its velvety texture purely from the squash itself. The result was a dish that was deeply flavorful and pleasantly light, tasting both rich and healthy. It even outshone my own attempts at butternut bisque!

Next, we indulged in the Steamed Local Clams, served in a delicate garlic cream sauce with parsley and accompanied by a perfectly grilled baguette. The clams absorbed the sauce beautifully, resulting in a dish that was both decadent and light. Despite the cream base, the dish was neither overly rich nor filling, making it a standout for seafood lovers.

Lastly, the North Carolina Apple Salad brought a refreshing balance to our appetizers. Featuring shredded Granny Smith apples (or a similar tart variety), cranberries, caramelized pecans, blue cheese, and mixed greens, all tossed in a champagne vinaigrette, it was a vibrant medley of flavors and textures. Each ingredient held its own, creating a harmonious and refreshing dish. I was so inspired by this salad that I plan to recreate it at home using my food processor.

Overall, the appetizers at SNOB were a perfect introduction to the meal, showcasing their ability to craft dishes that are as thoughtful as they are delicious.

Main Course Dishes

Exceptional Flavors

For the main course, we were thoroughly impressed by the dishes we chose, each showcasing SNOB’s mastery of flavor and preparation.

I ordered the New Zealand Lamb Rack, and it was, without question, the best lamb rack I’ve ever had. Cooked medium, the lamb was perfectly tender with a slightly pink center. It was served with muhammara, crispy roasted potatoes topped with feta, and a rosemary reduction. The flavors blended beautifully, with the feta added just before serving, allowing it to remain intact and distinct. This thoughtful touch elevated the dish, as every element stood out while still harmonizing as a whole.

My husband, John, opted for the Grilled 8oz Tenderloin, which appeared as a classic steak rather than a roast. It was accompanied by a house steak sauce (think au jus rather than A1) and a rich truffle butter. These sauces enhanced the natural flavor of the steak so seamlessly that the standout was the meat itself, made even more indulgent by the subtle truffle notes. It was simply delicious and perfectly executed.

Since the tenderloin doesn’t come with a side, John chose the Garlic Mashed Potatoes—a familiar staple but one that SNOB elevates to perfection. Creamy, buttery, and with just the right amount of garlic, they were everything you could want from mashed potatoes.

Both dishes were exceptional, offering a dining experience that was memorable for both the execution and the thoughtfulness behind every flavor combination.

Desserts

A Temptation for Next Time

Although I was eager to try the Apple Pie and Banana Bread Pudding, neither John nor I had any room left after our incredible meal. While I can’t personally comment on the flavors, I did notice these desserts being served to other patrons, and they looked absolutely amazing—beautifully plated and enticing.

Next time, I’ll make sure to save room for one (or both!) of these sweet treats. Based on what I’ve seen, I can’t wait to experience them firsthand.

Final Thoughts

SNOB is an absolute must-visit if you’re craving the best home-cooked meal you’ve ever had—but with a touch of elevated charm. The atmosphere feels like stepping into a home that’s both cozy and stunning, and the food? It’s so good it might even give Grandma a run for her money! From start to finish, the experience is warm, welcoming, and utterly delicious. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just indulging in a fantastic meal, SNOB delivers on every level.
