Ambiance
Church and Union is a trendy, upscale restaurant in downtown Charleston, known for its vibrant atmosphere and creative, contemporary American cuisine. Set in a historic church building, the interior blends modern and gothic elements, featuring high ceilings, dramatic lighting, and bold artwork. Among the standout features are walls adorned with classic literary quotes, including Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, brought to life by artist Jon Norris. Additionally, the restaurant’s innovative dishes blend Southern influences with refined culinary techniques. On Saturday nights, live music adds to the festive ambiance, enhancing the overall experience.
This spot is a popular choice for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Its unique vibe makes it perfect for both casual outings and special occasions.
Service
At Church and Union, the service is outstanding. The staff is not only knowledgeable about the menu but also deeply familiar with the building’s history and artistic design. Servers eagerly share insights into both the food and the building’s transformation, enriching the overall dining experience. They provide thoughtful recommendations, explaining each dish’s preparation and flavor combinations. Moreover, their attention to detail and ability to weave the restaurant’s cultural and culinary stories make the service here truly remarkable.
Food Selection
The menu is diverse and seasonal, offering fresh seafood, locally sourced meats, and creative vegetarian options. Each dish is crafted with inventive flavor combinations. For instance, the crab cakes, duck, and prime steaks are some of the standout offerings. In addition, the restaurant’s craft cocktails are artfully prepared, further enhancing the dining experience. For those seeking the perfect pairing, the wine and beer selection is equally impressive, complementing the meals beautifully.
Appetizers
The appetizers at Church and Union offer a delightful variety. Diners can enjoy raw oysters, select fish and meat dishes, or a refreshing salad. Our waiter began our meal with complimentary chips and hummus, which were delicious. We then chose the Moroccan Meatballs and the Southern Salad.
The Moroccan Meatballs were seasoned to perfection, with fresh herbs that elevated the tender meat. The Southern Salad, though well-balanced, could have benefited from a touch more dressing to enhance its flavors. Both dishes set a great tone for the rest of the meal, signaling that we were in for a satisfying experience.
Main Courses
Church and Union’s main courses are just as impressive. I opted for the house-made ravioli, served with a delicate tomato cream sauce. While the filling and sauce were exceptional, the pasta was a bit too thick, slightly detracting from the overall dish. Nevertheless, the flavors were vibrant and fresh.
John chose the duck, and it was an absolute highlight of the evening. The whole berry sauce added just the right amount of sweetness and acidity, perfectly complementing the richness of the duck. It was a masterful execution, balancing texture and taste with finesse.
Desserts
The dessert menu at Church and Union changes frequently, reflecting the restaurant’s creative spirit. When I asked our server for a recommendation, he immediately suggested the carrot cake. It arrived beautifully presented and was incredibly moist. The cream cheese frosting was luscious, and the cake itself was spiced to perfection.
John selected the mousse-filled cookie, served with a rich chocolate sauce for dipping. The contrast between the light mousse and indulgent chocolate was delightful. Both desserts showcased the restaurant’s commitment to quality and creativity, ending our meal on a high note.
Final Thoughts
Church and Union is a dining destination unlike any other. From the moment you step inside, the artistic décor and enticing aromas create a unique sensory experience. The menu constantly surprises with inventive dishes that blend familiar flavors with refreshing twists.
I’ve also experienced their brunch, which was equally fantastic. The energy, food, and overall atmosphere are outstanding, no matter the time of day.
